Let me know what you think of the official video of my new single, Nostalgia! Stream it on all platforms: distrokid.com/hyperfollow/emmasaville1/nostalgia-2
This song is about what it's like to love and be loved so deeply, flaws and all (on both sides), and learning how to really trust and let someone else in. As you’ll hear, the song is mainly in English, but I wrote several verses in Portuguese, as think other languages help me express things more fully, as you can’t always find the right words or expressions in one language.
The talented Pablo Dominguez mixed/mastered Nostalgia, and wrote and recorded some excellent percussion lines for it. Another talented local friend, Stephen Donoghue, wrote and recorded cello, which I think really takes the track to another level. Can’t wait to hear what everyone thinks!
Backstory:
I heard Mark Villholm, a very talented Sheffield based guitarist and Producer, playing a gig (in pre covid times) and in between sets he was jamming on stage, I loved the riff he was playing and could immediately hear a melody in my head. I recorded it on my phone, and then asked him if I could write a song on top of his guitar part. Mark agreed and so here we are :) I originally just posted the track (entitled Tudo Muda [Everything Changes] on my YouTube, but I decided to revisit it this year, so I’ve changed a few of the Portuguese lyrics added harmonies and rerecorded the vocals to make it even stronger than before.
In general, I always try and anchor my songs in my lived experience, so to a particular time, person or place (often all three!). I think this can help my songs portray more emotion, and connect more with listeners.
Let me know how you connect with this song.
lyrics
Nostalgia – Emma Saville
Those little laughter lines, that crinkle around your eyes
You always know how, to turn my day around,
Turn my day around
Me ensinou o amor, me ensinou paixão
[You taught me love, you taught me passion]
Sei o que fazer, preciso de você,
[I know what to do, I need you]
Preciso de você
[I crave you]
A love more than lust, is holding us tight,
The sounds that you make, as we drift to sleep,
As we drift to sleep
Penso em você, revivo nosso amor
[I think of you, reliving our love]
Vivo a sonhar, apenas a lembrar
[I live dreaming, just to remember]
Apenas a lembrar
[If only to remember]
Trust, hope turns to love,
Trust, hope into love,
Trust, hope turns to love
Tão perfeito como um sonho bom
[As perfect as a good dream]
Tão leve como um dia de domingo
[As light as a Sunday]
Como um dia de domingo
[As light as a Sunday]
Hands along my face, trace the lines I’ve lived
It’s not hard to love your scars
That’s everywhere you’ve been
That’s everywhere you’ve been
That’s everywhere you’ve been
