How often do you feel an instant connection with someone? I wrote my new single Ontem (released TODAY woop!) about that moment when you meet someone whilst dancing and have such an incredible chemistry with them that you can’t get them out of your head. I have danced for most of my life, and have been doing Latin (largely partner) dances for over 10 years, however, I rarely feel a strong chemistry with someone, so when it does happen, it’s all the more memorable.

Ontem is my second Música Popular Brasileira (MPB) song. MPB is a trend in post-bossa nova urban popular music in Brazil that revisits typical Brazilian styles such as samba, samba-canção and baião and other Brazilian regional music, combining them with foreign influences, such as jazz and rock. I wrote this song whilst living in Salvador, Brazil.


“Ontem” means yesterday (check out the full music video - link in my bio - for the full translation), & I felt the lyrics captured my experience & feelings more fully in Portuguese than in English. For me, music has such a powerful ability to express & extract emotions I couldn't quite (just) put into words. Sometimes you need melodies as well.

I first performed the original unplugged version (just vocals & ukulele) of Ontem live in Brazil in 2019 (search for "Ontem live - Emma Savile"). This is the reworked, more upbeat Brazilian Popular Music MPB arrangement (with guitar, bass, keys, & percussion). The instrumental arrangement was recorded & produced in Salvador by two of my insanely talented Brazilian friends @undersoncunha & @pedrofonseca.77

It was important to me to work with Brazilians, as I wrote the song in Salvador and wanted the music to reflect a lot of the inner processing I did whilst living in the stunning Bahia, as well as honouring local talent. I'd highly recommend Anderson and Pedro, hugely gifted musicians and producers.

Pablo Dominguez mixed/mastered Ontem & Nostalgia, as you can hear, to an amazingly professional standard. I met Pablo via fiverr.com but turned out we had about 10 mutual friends from across the London Latin music scene! Another example of how the universe puts the right people in your life at the right time! Check out Pablo’s insta and website - he’s an incredible musician and producer.
